Cyber 2023 G.IRL Recap

Our 2 Annual Cyber G.IRL Cohort was a success! We have rounded out our 8-week coding cohort with a complete webpage designed, coded, and written by our teens.

Throughout this project, our participants collaborated and learned with other organizations to write articles, create the code, and design the website's look.

The journalist partnered with Black Woman-owned and Watts-based bookstore OURWATTS. Together they created articles about Fast Fashion, Travel, and food.

Our Graphic Designers partnered with BIPOC-owned design agency Hunnibuzz to create and design the website's look. This included building wireframes, and mood boards, sourcing fonts, colors, and even the photos for the site.

Finally, our coders worked with “The Hidden Genius Project,” a nonprofit that works with Black male youth to help them learn about coding, entrepreneurship, and building solid relationships with Black Male Mentors. So our coders learned how to code from teenagers from their respective communities. The girls learned Javascript to construct and assemble the group’s ideas into a website.

At the end of this program, we let our participants keep the brand-new Macbook Air Laptops they used to create their websites. Doing this enabled us to close the digital divide in 12 households. We also introduced coding, journalism, and web design to teens who had never heard of those careers. Of the 12 participants, ten said they would consider a career in their group choice.

You can check out the website they created HERE.
